In this project a unique innovative system to support fall prevention in extramural care will be developed and tested. This system, called FARAO (Fall Risk Assessment in Older people) is based on miniaturized body-fixed inertial sensors that allow ambulatory measurements of body acceleration. With the appropriate algorithms and analyses, this data will be used to detect impending falls (instability) and actual falls in older adults in daily life, during their daily physical activities, and to predict their overall fall risk. In addition, the system will entail an automated procedure for communication of the findings to the home care organization and to the general practitioner.
